Follow these steps to install beryl:

1. Ensure you have compatible video hardware and drivers:
 - If you have an nvidia card, build 9629 or higher of the proprietary nvidia drivers
 is required.
 - If you have an ATI Radeon card, recent versions of ATI's fglrx drivers are supported,
and open source drivers (versions r2xx and r3xx) are partially supported.
 - Intel i810 cards are supported with open source drivers.

2. Ensure you have Xorg 7.1 or greater installed and properly configured:
 - Run `X -version' to see your version of Xorg.
 - Edit the Xorg configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and add the following line to
the "Device" section of the file:
 Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "On"
 - Restart Xorg

3. Ensure you are a sudoer. The installation script tries to install the software via
the sudo command. Run `visudo' as root or see your distribution's documentation.

4. Install prerequisites from source or using your distribution's package manager. If
installing binary distribution packages, you will need the development packages for many
of these, usually ending in -dev or -devel. This is not a comprehensive list, and many
of the packages have their own prerequisites. See the wiki
 (http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Main_Page) for distribution-specific dependencies
 and build instructions.
 - autoconf (http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/autoconf/)
 - automake 1.9 (http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/automake/)
 - gcc (http://gcc.gnu.org)
 - X11 headers, including X11 proto headers (http://www.x.org)
 - libpng (http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/libpng.html)
 - libjpeg (http://www.ijg.org)
 - libwnck (Window Navigator Construction Kit) (http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/libwnck/)
 - GNOME2 headers and libraries (http://www.gnome.org)
 - libwindow-settings from GNOME2
 - libXcomposite (http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/XComposite)
 - libXdamage (http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/XDamage)
 - intltool (http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/intltool/)
 - python (http://python.org/)
 - python-gtk2 (http://www.pygtk.org/)
 - python-pyrex (http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/greg.ewing/python/Pyrex/)

5. Run the makeall script from the trunk of your subversion checkout (./makeall). This script
will move into each required directory and build and install each component. If at any time
the build fails, you are probably missing required software. The error message(s) should
be helpful in determining what is missing. Install the missing software and try again.

6. When the build is complete, run `beryl-manager' to start beryl.
